A Posthumous Tribute to Dr. Sebi at Go Raw DC, Muntu Law Will Speak

Like Dr. Sebi, Muntu Law takes a no holds barred approach to natural healing. In an interview last year at her health and wellness store Namaskar, she said, “African Americans are addicted to food and the spices. . . . They’re sicker than people in some third world countries.” I found that quite an indictment. But studies support Law’s claims and experience counseling food addicts. According to WebMD, “experiments in animals and humans show that for some people the same reward and pleasure centers of the brain that are triggered by addictive drugs like cocaine and heroin are also activated by food, especially highly palatable foods, foods rich in sugar, fat and salt.” Needless to say, sugar, fat and salt are key ingredients in beloved American southern cooking and soul food.

Law and her husband radio personality Bob Law own and operate Namaskar: Bob Law’s Health and Wellness Store in Brooklyn, New York. For more than twenty-five years, they’ve offered consultations in the best foods to eat and ways to eliminate waste from the body to keep it functioning properly.

Law and other natural health practitioners will speak at Go Raw DC, Sunday, April 29, 2018, at the Washington Ethical Society in Washington, D.C. Go Raw DC is a natural food, herb and health expo that will focus on ways people can make healthy food choices. According to the event’s organizer Adio Akil, Go Raw DC is a campaign designed to teach people that eating healthy is super simple. There will also be an abundance of information about the benefits of eating raw food. Go Raw DC begins at 3:00 p.m. and will feature presentations, natural food demonstrations, performances and a posthumous tribute to Dr. Sebi, who died in 2016 at the age of 82.

In the early 1980s, Akil helped launch Dr. Sebi’s career in natural healing in Washington, D.C. at the now-closed Community Warehouse. It served as a springboard for Dr. Sebi to consult with the public and use his herbal compounds the African Bio Mineral Balance to cure people of diseases such as diabetes, sickle cell anemia, cancer and lupus. He subsequently opened an office in Brooklyn, New York, where he treated clients for an ever-growing list of diseases, including AIDS and hypertension.

Akil returns full circle to the Washington metropolitan area with Go Raw DC, one of several traveling natural health expos she started in Brooklyn. In addition to Muntu Law, other speakers include Dr. Sebi’s oldest son Alfredo Bowman Jr., Diane Bailey, brand ambassador for hair products company Shea Moisture and breathologist and personal wellness specialist Ayo Handy-Kendi.

The Washington Ethical Society is located at 7750 16th St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20012.
